In a touching tribute to a beloved member of the Connellsville community, the Connellsville Lions and Leos Club, alongside numerous residents, shared in the remembrance and celebration of the inaugural memorial walk-run-ride for Jamie McPoyle. The event not only commemorated Jamie’s life but also served as the dedication of a plaque in his honor and the renaming of Austin Park Field to the Jamie McPoyle Memorial Field.

Jamie was known for his dedication to making the field accessible for Little League and various community activities. It was a testament to his hard work and commitment that the field stands as a vibrant hub for local sports today, lovingly maintained and named in his honor.

The event, held on a crisp morning, began with an opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. Three Connellsville High School students stirred hearts with a rendition of the National Anthem, followed by a heartfelt prayer offered by one of Jamie’s sisters. Participants then embarked on a route through the streets of the South Side, passing by Jamie’s home before returning to the park for the dedication ceremony.

The ceremony was a poignant affair, with several individuals recognized for their efforts in organizing the event. Mayor Lincoln shared words of gratitude, underscoring Jamie’s impact on the community. Another of Jamie’s sisters delivered a touching speech, reflecting on his love for Connellsville, while Jamie’s wife, Gwen, expressed her heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.

The unveiling of the plaque was a moment of profound significance, marked by the capture of numerous photographs to preserve the memory. Above the plaque, the flag flapped proudly, adorned with the emblems of the Philadelphia sports teams that Jamie cherished. It was a fitting tribute to a man who held his hometown and his sports teams dear to his heart.
